Investigators from the Yorktown Police Department were dispatched to Shrub Oak Park at approximately 7:15 a.m. on Sept. 6, where there was a report of criminal mischief. Police said that the initial investigation determined that an unknown suspect had entered the pool area, and lit a fire that caused “extensive damage.”
According to police, at approximately 10:25 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 21, an officer stopped a car being driven by Carmel resident Jarod Sangalli, 19, when he crossed pavement markings, prompting a traffic stop. During that stop, the officer reported that he recognized Sangalli as a person of interest in the arson investigation and contacted detectives.
Police said that detectives identified Sangalli and determined he allegedly entered the fenced-in pool area at Shrub Oak Park and allegedly started a fire that caused damage to the pool area and equipment inside the fenced-in area. The total cost of the damage was estimated at $39,900.
Sangalli was arrested and charged with criminal mischief, arson and criminal trespassing. He was remanded to the Westchester County Department of Corrections in lieu of $5,000 bond or $2,500 cash bail. Sangalli is scheduled to appear in Yorktown Justice Court on Jan. 3.
